Researcher Outlines Seven Steps to Link Popularity

SINGAPORE — As major search engines like Google and Yahoo continue to clamp down on link farming and fine-tune algorithms that prevent false rankings, many online businesses continue to look for ways to enhance their link popularity.

Gerrick W., a marketing expert at 1st Internet Marketing Solution who writes extensively about Internet marketing strategies, says there are seven ethical link-building strategies.

Firstly, according to Gerrick W., webmasters should focus on a site’s internal linking.

“Having a well-organized internal linking structure insures that your website gets ‘spidered’ and that all pages of your website gets indexed by the search engines,” Gerrick W. said. “This in turn increases the chances of the number of phrases that your website has the potential to rank for. I have had website traffic from key phrases that I never thought of.”

Second, Gerrick W. advises site operators to avoid human edited directories and focus on acquiring inbound links by distributing content. Aside from being listed in DMOZ, which he admits will enhance page ranking, he says one-way linking should primarily focus on links embedded in shared content.

Insofar as reciprocal linking goes, Gerrick W. believes it is important to plan your trading partners carefully.

“In times past, website owners have made sizeable directories with multiple links that are not relevant to theirs,” he says. “Now, search engines have become wiser and look for link relevance. A word of advice here: Know whom you are trading links with. Don't just choose any Tom, Dick, Harry or toothless Jane to be your link partners.”

The fourth strategy is to vary the text of inbound links. Gerrick W. says it will not appear natural to search engines if every site in a network links together with the same link description. He suggests varying the text of inbound links using a few key phrases.

Gerrick W. also says that link growth should be done steadily, and that sites should not grow too fast.

“Google penalizes new sites with low traffic that grow their links too quickly, whereas a well-established high traffic site that increases by a few thousand links a month will viewed as normal,” he says. “The rate at which links are created without being penalized by Google is directly proportional to the age of the website. For owners of new sites, bear this in mind, if you are thinking about buying inbound links.”

Sixth, Gerrick W. recommends having inbound links from different ranking sites. If inbound links to a site all come from similarly ranked partners, he says, it will set off a red flag that the links were purchased.

Finally, Gerrick W. says that webmasters should always actively participate in forums or blogs, but should do so with some calculation.

“Don't just post threads indiscriminately on forums,” he says. “Search engines view this as spamming. Participate in forums to learn and to contribute to the communities and at the same time gather inbound links. You also will build credibility for yourself and your business if you are a solution to people's problems.” .
